Rick Perry “Strong” Ad – Kissing Ass and slowly killing Separation of Church and State – Opinion
I just couldn’t sleep after seeing the latest Rick Perry Ad. Rick Perry again follows his mantra of saying anything or doing anything to get elected and this time he goes on to kiss the ass of Christian Fundamentalism. I have nothing against faith, and nothing against religion. I don’t mean any insult by the “kissing of the ass” to Christians in general they are on the receiving end without their asking. Yet it is a phrase we can all relate when you know someone is just puckering up for a prize.
His latest political ad entitled “Strong” has already received close to 100k dislikes on YouTube. Why such a negative response? It’s simple. Most conservatives however isolationist and small government know there is one Rock of the United States of America that can not be ignored; The Constitution and Bill of Rights, particularly the first amendment the clause about separation of Church and State.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Everyone is very strict about following the second amendment to the letter and can quote it, but the first amendment is bothersome to Fundamentalist Christians because they believe the US was founded as a Christian nation with Christian ideals, and a Christian faith. Yet the earliest of the Colonies were Puritans, Quakers, Methodist and Baptist. These separate religions converged on American because they were fleeing the persecution they received in Europe but quickly they turned on one another employing the same atrocities such as imposing the death penalty, segregating their settlement, censoring other religions and persecuting those that did not align with their point of view. The founding fathers who were deists saw what could happen if they allowed a religion to dominate and enacted the first amendment with the first few words to separate government from religion.
The first amendment does not follow with the first commandment although many will tell you that they are one and the same. The first four commandments are about God, who he is, what he is not, how he should be worshiped and how he should be remembered. The Bill of Rights focuses on liberties and freedoms granted to every person within the Union and makes liberty, freedom, and justice its major points. The first lines of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights do not include God. Why? Because although the Bill of Rights mentions everyone is entitled to their religion there is no one religion or point of view the government can uphold. This separation of Church and State are pivotal to Freedom.
You only have to look at what happens in countries with theocracies or where one religion is enforced. We fought against the Taliban in Afghanistan. The Taliban enforced one of the strictest interpretations of Sharia law ever seen in the Muslim world. In Iraq we removed the Sunnis from power who massacred Shi’a and Kurdish movements. In countries based on religious law like you have Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Sudan, Saudi Arabia you have massive human right violations, the degradation of women in the society, poverty and large percentage of illiteracy, and they are by most candidates in this election “States that harbor Terror.”
Yet Rick Perry feels that a Christian Faith will do better. What will he do once he is in power? mandate the reading of the bible in schools like they do the Koran in Afghanistan? enforce laws removing women from religious post, and incarcerate gays? You really can’t tell because he just pucker his lips and spits out what you want to hear.
Will he go from base to base and discharge every gay soldier and tell them their sacrifice and duty to the nation is not needed because of their sexuality? Will he allow Islāmic children to pray next to Christian children? Will the federal government enforce the practice of Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and Ramada? The answer is obvious if it starts with Christ its the only one he will allow.
So Rick Perry, stop pandering and focus on the real issues. The Economy, Jobs, and Washington’s massive deficits. We don’t need another religious lesson we can always go to a church of our choice for that. Government has no business in religion, and to my Christian friends, this isn’t an attack against you, but don’t allow someone to take your church and faith and use it in politics. Politicians have lied, cheated, stolen to get to where they are, Rick Perry is no exception. Your faith is your own, don’t let Perry own you.
