EAST LANSING, Mich. ― Skippyjon Jones is a little kitten with big ears and big dreams! Sometimes he pretends to be a bird, a llama, a whale ― anything BUT a cat! His wild imagination takes over when he looks in a mirror. “Holy guacamole, I am not a Siamese cat – I am a CHIHUAHUA!” He dons a mask and cape and transforms into Skippito Friskito, the greatest canine sword fighter in old Mexico! But when the local pack of Chihuahuas is terrorized by the gigantic bee, will Skippyjon be a fraidy-cat or the top dog? Find out Saturday, December 10, 2011 when this new musical (based on the book by Judy Schachner) is performed at Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre. Tickets are on sale now at whartoncenter.com, the Auto-Owners Ticket Office or by calling 1-800-WHARTON.
The musical features a libretto and lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila (Drama Desk nominee for Altar Boyz and Click, Clack, Moo) and a score by Eli Bolin (Sesame Street). The show is directed by Peter Flynn and choreographed by Devanand Janki (the director-choreographer team behind many Theatreworks USA productions). It features costumes by Tracy Christensen (Souvenir and Shrek on Broadway, Lortel nominee for Theatreworks’ Seussical) and sets by Rob Odorisio (three-time Emmy nominee for The Guiding Light, Theatreworks USA’s If You Give a Mouse a Cookie).
Theatreworks USA is professional not-for-profit theatre for young and family audiences. Since 1961, Theatreworks USA has entertained and instructed over 85 million people in 49 states and Canada, now performing for about three million people annually. Actors, writers, choreographers and designers of Theatreworks USA have gone on to successes in musical theatre, television and cinema. Under the direction of Barbara Pasternack (Artistic Director) and Ken Arthur (Producing Director), Theatreworks received both a Drama Desk and a Lucille Lortel Award. In addition, Theatreworks USA was the recipient of a 2001 Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Award, and in May 2000, The Actors Fund of American bestowed its Medal of Honor upon its founders, Jay Harnick and Charles Hull.
SkippyJon Jones is part of the Act One Family Series at Wharton center and is generously sponsored by Granger and Mid-Michigan MRI. Target is the National Tour Sponsor of this production.
