President Obama’s Policy on Deportation Is Unevenly Applied

President Obama’s Policy on Deportation Is Unevenly Applied – NYTimes.com.

“A new Obama administration policy to avoid deportations of illegal immigrants who are not criminals has been applied very unevenly across the country and has led to vast confusion both in immigrant communities and among agents charged with carrying it out.” Begins a New York Times article that reports on the confusion caused by the new policy set out by the White House and the uneven application of this policy by rank and file immigration officials. In some cases the intention of the policy is followed out with great relief to undocumented immigrants who fall into what a Memo described as “particular care and consideration” for veterans and active-duty troops, elderly immigrants and minors, and those brought here illegally as children.

However stories of how consideration and particular care are subjective and applied unevenly on a per case bases. Describing two stories of how a couple 8 days away from marrying to put their immigration issues in order were prevented from doing so even when the case merited review, another an immigrant from Germany was allowed to continue his immigration process after a review of his case a minor brought by his parents and over stayed his visa.

The confusion the article describes is by the White House giving a general outline of policy and little effort to instruct their ICE and immigration officials in what qualifies as  ”particular care and consideration” cases. Mostly it is put forth that it is only a way to placate to the Latino population that can vote for Obama and being used as a political issue to bring more support for Obama’s re-election campaign. In any case it is clear that the uneven immigration policies carried out still have a long way from a good reform.
