“Papito” Sepulveda III was introduced to the sport of boxing in 1995 by his father, Alejo Sepulveda Jr., at the age of 11. He began training at the Pride Boxing Club, located in the Burton Heights district of Grand Rapids, MI alongside his brothers; Angel, Israel, and Isaac.
Sepulveda comes from a fighting family. His father competed in the local Golden Gloves State Tournament in the early 1980’s, and his maternal uncle, Alex Fernandez, competed as an amateur on the all-Navy boxing team, where he won the all-armed forces championship before moving on to a short stint as a professional.
With his father in one ear and his uncle in the other, boxing was instilled in Papito before he ever even stepped foot in a gym. Once in the gym, however, Papito’s potential and natural boxing talent was spotted by fellow Grand Rapids-native and boxing mainstay Floyd Mayweather Sr. They began working together and Mayweather Sr. soon took Papito under his wing, teaching him the game of boxing just as he did his son, Floyd Mayweather Jr., whom many believe to be the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
After several months training under the tutelage of Mayweather Sr., Papito began competing in amateur boxing bouts and accumulated a record of 9-1 before Mayweather Sr. left Grand Rapids for Las Vegas, NV to train his son as he rose to the top of the ranks. Yet that was not the end of their fighter/trainer relationship. Papito spent the summers living and training in Las Vegas with both Mayweathers, father and son.
In 2000, Papito took and even bigger step in fulfilling his dream to become champion of the world by moving in with Mayweather Sr. during his junior year of high school. Papito attended Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas by day and trained with Senior in the evenings. This continued for the duration of his junior year but ended because of Mayweather Sr.’s obligation to train Oscar De La Hoya, who resided in California.
Papito returned to Michigan, continuing to train and compete under the guidance of his father while accumulating an amateur record of 40-10. After countless State and Regional Championships, Papito put boxing on hold to further his education at Michigan State University. While in college, Papito’s itch to get back into the ring steadily heightened—fueled by the success of old amateur boxing friends, whom he now watched boxing at the professional level on ESPN and Fox Sports.
After four years of college, Papito still had about a year-and-a-half of course work to complete before graduation. He decided to switch obligations and put his degree on hold to once again pursue a career as a professional boxer with the help, this time, of Mayweather Jr. Papito had happened to see the champion at a service event he was hosting in Grand Rapids and was offered the opportunity to train and fight under his new promotion company, Mayweather Promotions.
Thus, Papito took him up on the offer and returned to Las Vegas, where he had his first professional bout on November 4th, 2006 on the Mayweather vs. Baldomir undercard. Papito went on to fight twice more under Mayweather Promotions before both parties had a mutual agreement to part ways.
Papito returned to Michigan, re-enrolled at MSU and in the Spring of 2009, graduated with a bachelor’s degree from MSU’s college of social science. After graduation, Papito jumped back into the ring in his home town of Grand Rapids, MI at the annual Boxing at the Ball Park event and won a unanimous decision over journeyman boxer, Guy Packer.
Since then, Papito has put his degree to work, managing tutoring programs at inner-city schools in Dallas, TX. Due to budget cuts, Sepulveda unfortunately was laid off and now is back in pursuit of his dream to becoming champion of the world.
